Chapter One — Personal

The ManBehind the Mission

From an Arizona birth to Louisville streets — the early life, faith, family, and everyday passions that shaped the person behind Veterans Restoration of Louisville.

Origins

Born in Arizona. Made in Louisville.

Wes Miller was born in Arizona but moved to Louisville, Kentucky before he was four years old. Louisville is the only home he's ever really known — its neighborhoods, its people, its character. He was raised by his mother Norma and grew up navigating a life that required him to be self-sufficient from an early age.

He bounced through several schools — Southern Middle, Iroquois Middle, Iroquois High for three years, then Fern Creek for six months, then Jefferson County for another six months — before dropping out less than halfway through his senior year. School wasn't where Wes was thriving, but that didn't stop him. He went out and earned his GED and enlisted in the United States Army almost immediately after.

Looking back, Wes credits those early years with teaching him resilience. He was self-sufficient before most kids his age understood what that meant — working, cutting grass, doing door-to-door lawn care before he was 16. He's said plainly that what he lacked in a traditional academic start, he more than made up for in courage.

"What I lacked in skill, I picked up in courage. I fought my whole school career. And dropping out wasn't giving up — it was redirecting." — Wes Miller

Early Life — Key Facts

Education

A Student Who Learned His Own Way.

Wes maximized the educational benefits the Army gave him. While on active duty he took every college course he could get his hands on, especially during his deployment to Iraq. He attended Jefferson Community Technical College in Louisville — one semester at the Dixie campus and six semesters downtown — and came out with an Associate of Applied Science, with Engineering as his major focus.

He then pushed further. During his time in the roofing industry, he attended Code Louisville (February through August 2018), learning front-end web development — HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. He studied for and earned Xactimate Level 1 Certification through XMS University, a credential that would reshape his career entirely. Wes is someone who looks at a difficult situation and says "I don't lose, I learn."

Education & Certifications

Faith & Community

Faith That Shows Up in the Field.

Wes is a follower of Jesus Christ — and he'll say so plainly. This isn't something he keeps separate from his professional life; it's the foundation of how he runs his business. He serves monthly at Celebrate Recovery, contributing 12–15 hours of service to over 200 attendees regularly. He's been doing it consistently for over a year.

He's also an active member of the Iroquois Hill VFW Post, where he holds the leadership role of Adjutant. Over the past two years, community service has been a priority — he helps where he can, when he can, without expectation. That's the culture he's building at VRL. The company reflects the man.

"I trust and love God. I want to live a principle-centered, values-driven life. Be like Jesus — love everyone, be patient. Be like Socrates — think and reason through everything." — Wes Miller

Family

Why He Does What He Does.

Wes will tell you plainly: his kids are why he does this. He has three children — Leigha Miller, Aurora Doyle, and Olivia Doyle — and a partner in Stephanie Doyle. He left a company that was more lucrative to build something of his own, largely because he wanted to be present and engaged. Could he have spent more time chasing money? Probably. But being there for his kids was worth it.

Family extends further too. His mother Norma Currey (now Kerch) and stepfather Kevin Kerch are part of his foundation. He has siblings — Amy Hobbs, Bill Coates, Bobby Miller, and Amber Coates. The VRL brand isn't just a business — it's a legacy he's building for the people who matter most.

Hobbies & Interests

The Off-Clock Version.

Wes is someone who finds meaning in mastery — even in his hobbies. He doesn't just cook: he smokes whole briskets (50+), ribs (200+), and does reverse-sear, fire-finish steaks at home that he'll put up against any restaurant. He doesn't just read: he's worked through 100+ books in the past five to seven years (including 25 on Audible), and can quote from Tony Robbins, Napoleon Hill, Jim Rohn, and the E-Myth in the same conversation. He doesn't just garden — he's got a working herb garden with basil, oregano, Italian parsley, rosemary, and lemon thyme, and just harvested his first tomatoes.

Running and nature hikes ground him. He sees running as a metaphor for life — you can only control your breathing, your pace, and when to push. And yes — he genuinely enjoys cutting grass and washing cars. He knows it's a little unusual. He embraces it.

Philosophy

How He Thinks About the World.

Wes describes himself as someone with big dreams and big goals — and a clear framework for getting there. He wants to live a principle-centered, values-driven life. He gives credit to God first, family second, and community third. He believes in helping others get what they want as the fastest path to getting what he wants.

His reading list says a lot: Think and Grow Rich, Rich Dad Poor Dad, How to Win Friends and Influence People, 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, Awaken the Giant Within, Can't Hurt Me, The 5 AM Club, The E-Myth, Becoming Supernatural. He moves between books the way some people flip through channels — restlessly, always looking for the next thing that sharpens him.

He calls it plainly: "I have been around the block. Six months of what I do makes you a veteran in my industry. A year and you're your grandfather in it." He didn't get to where he is by accident. He studied his way there.
